ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!This was my first Apocalypse novel, so I didn't really know what to expect. Well, actually, I expected zombies, you know like Night of the Living Dead? Well, I got SO.MUCH.NOT.THAT lol.
The story is about a group of twenty-somethings who are a part of a special team; Apocalypse Assassins who's main goal is to prevent the Apocalypse and stop the creatures. I don't want to spoil the story because there is so much there that it would be smart for me to stick with writing style and the swoony assassins #TeamDylan.
The story is written from Dylan's POV, so it's fun seeing how Laine captures the thoughts of a cocky, 22 year old male, who loves his job, his friends and of course the ladies. He's super hot, but full of heart. He is sure to be your next book boyfriend. Not only does Laine provide a swoony MC, but the secondaries are equally lovable, especially Maria, who is another assassin.
Thea is a strong character on her own, and is the challenge Dylan has set his mind on winning. And yeah, he plays to win!
D.Laine is an exceptional author. Many people know her under her previous works The Ignited Series and What Comes Next. Because she is versatile, you'd never know it was the same author. She takes the concept of dystopian and urban fantasy to a brand new level, full of twists and turns and sexual tension and I won't lie, I got a little creeped out on some of the parts. Yes, I read with my lights on (I'm a punk).
If you are looking for something brand new and out of the box, then you'll want to add this to your list of #MUSTREAD.

I don't normally like to read YA stories but it sounded a bit different. For .99, it was worth a gamble. The story really is interesting. Yes there are zombie like characters called "tags" but they are demon created. It did seem to drag at times, too much time spent on other pursuits than the job at hand. I will probably take a chance on book 2.
This book was the best apocalypse book I've read in a long time. Its has everything you want in a good book. It had adventure, romance, OMG moments, and plenty of laughs. This book had me on the edge of my seat and I read it in one sitting. I can't wait to read the next book.
This wasn't quite what I was expecting but it was so good! Once I started it, the story just pulled me in and left me wanting more. Laine did an exceptional job mixing reality with apocalyptic fantasy in a way that was both believable and kinda haunting. I loved meeting the characters and watching as Dylan and Thea's relationship strengthened. There were several twists and the action was balanced well with the romance. I think this could be a surprising treat for fans of many tastes and I look forward to the next book!
Absolutely brilliant beginning to a new apocalyptic series. The author does not throw out typical zombie fare for the reader's consumption; instead, every idea you think you know about this genre of books, is challenged and viewed through a new perspective. The world the author builds is rich and detailed while the characters pull you along, keeping the reader invested in the lives of the characters. Several times I thought that I knew where the story was going, only to find that new perspective heading in a different direction. I loved this book and cannot wait until the next installment.
Assassins, zombies, and the apocalypse...what more do you need? Ok, so tags aren't QUITE zombies, but close enough. Dylan and Jake are assassins assigned to take out vessels who will one day be inhabited by Lucifer's minions. Do I have your attention yet? This is NOT your typical zombie book, secret assassin book, or apocalypse book. It's not typical at all, because it's amazing. Plus, there's some hottttt romance, too. Read it! I can't tell you any more without giving away more than I already have. If you like secret agents, zombies, doomsday conspiracies, new adult romance, or books, you'll probably love it.
I love this book. From the first page I was sucked into the world of two assassins and their journey in Bozeman, Montana. I couldn’t put it down and when I HAD to all I could do was think about the story until I could read again. D. Laine has an amazing talent of drawing you into the world she created. Dylan is swoon worthy and every bit of a cocky, egotistic and sexy assassin until he meets Thea. Thea has some sass in her but she is also confident and kind. They have amazing chemistry together. The other characters are great as well. You definitely will have a soft spot for Jake, Dylan’s partner. You will not be disappointed with “Marked (Apocalypse Assassins Book 1) by D. Laine. You will be biting your nails through all the action, adventure, and trouble Dylan finds himself in. Book two can’t come fast enough.
D. Laine has written a compelling and fresh apocalyptic novel. I found it quite different from other ones I've read that start right away taking place in a dystopian future; this book is set in a normal modern society in a small college town in Montana with the main characters being some average-seeming 20-somethings, employed and a student, respectively. Though Thea--the second POV we get--is a normal photography major with romantic interest in the new guy in town, that guy, Dylan--the first POV--is charged with preventing the apocalypse from kicking off by demon-hunting with his partner, Jake. This gives a supernatural twist and the plot leads us across the threshold into how the US could transition into a Hellish-zombie-type dystopia (warning a little gory, but then I'm a wimp). I'm going to gush for a moment, as a geologist myself, that I really enjoyed how Dylan's undercover persona was a geology student and I'll not say more than that, except that it was very impressively inventive of Laine to use natural phenomena as plot-points in her dark tale (and she did her research on that too)! I got a strong feeling of the TV show Supernatural from this book, down to Dylan's lady-chasing charm, against which Thea is a challenge. A fun, supernatural/zombie, New Adult read with strong main characters and equally personable secondary characters, and a unique plot that'll keep you on your toes and wary of Lucifer's next move!
